Unsharp Mask + Pixelpost = Nice Thumbnails September 25, 2007

Posted by jaywilliams

The Pixelpost dev team has been working like mad on the next version of Pixelpost (v1.7). And to prove it, today we just finished testing a new feature that I think all of our users will appreciate.

It’s called: Unsharp Mask

Now you might be thinking, what does this mean to me? To boil it all down, it will means your thumbnails to look better than ever. And since everyone’s photos are different, you will be able to choose how much or how little sharpening you would like your thumbnails to have.

To illustrate this, I’ve made a little image showing the different sharpening options, and their results:
Sharpening Example
Note: current/past versions of Pixelpost all use “none”.

See how blurry the thumbnails look without any sharpening? And how much better they look when the sharpening is turned on? That’s the magic of the Unsharp Mask.

hi, sounds cool. even cooler might be the chance to contact any of these hard working people to ask for a (payed) pro-version of this lovely tool..? don’t get me wrong: it’s a fantastic tool yet, but some of those photographers have wishes and i thought why not ask if you could do it and earn some money? if so please contact me, bests anne

Pixelpost is an Open Source Project, which means it’s free, and it’s built by a group of volunteers. So there is no special “Pro” version, since every version of Pixelpost is “Pro”. :-)

If you would like to help out the project monetarily, we have a donation link at the bottom of the site.

hi jay, i know that it is quite sophisticated yet.. and i do love it, no question. but as many before did, someone asked again for having pictures sorted not by date but by name or even by checkbox in the admin panel. unfortunately i do not know how to change this in php/mysql. so i hoped to find some of the authors to think about another version of the application which would be interesting for so many people i think……..

Anne, I do understand your remarks. However, pixelpost foremost a blogging tool. In the new version we’ve implemented a reverse order, showing the first uploaded picture first. If you want to sort by name, this might be difficult. All filenames have a timestamp in them to prevent accidental overwriting. You can however sort on title if that is what you mean. But we don’t want to overflood our users with options. That is why we have Addons. (which are quite powerful)

..You can however sort on title if that is what you mean.

do I !? i didn’t know that. so how is that???
thank you so much for your hint.

as for the blogging tool: i know that and personally i love blogging. but as i do know a bunch of those photographers who do not want to blog but to show their work in a special order, i often think why not give it to them? and as your team is the one who knows where to start i just thought to ask here directly.. may be i will have to find some other php crack..

Very-very useful feature for thumbnails! Thanks!

I wish this would work on the flash generated thumbnails. I like to customize each thumbnail, but they are never sharp. :(
