Where’s v2.0? January 6, 2010

Posted by jaywilliams

Some of you may be wondering what’s going on with the rumored Pixelpost v2.0. Well, as we’ve mentioned in previous posts, v2.0 is a complete rewrite, but we’re not simply trying to recreate the same issues with v1.0 again, we want to build a new core that can power Pixelpost for the next decade.

Believe it or not, the codebase for v2.0 has gone through many incarnations so far, in fact it’s in it’s forth rewrite.

What, you’re rewriting an app you haven’t released??!!

Yes, remember, we’re experimenting with new programing techniques and designs, and to be honest, not all of those experiments paned out like we planned.

In the previous incarnation of v2.0, the code was rather stable, but the whole system had gotten very complex and bloated, which goes against one of the core goals for v2.0: Simplicity.

We want v2.0 to be easy to use, flexible, and lightweight. And until we get the right mix of each, we really don’t want to call it finished.

But I’m happy to announce that the latest incarnation of Pixelpost v2.0 is looking very promising. It seems with each revision, the code keeps improving, and this latest revision is the best one yet. Will this one be it? Only time will tell, but I’ll let you in on a little secret…

Template tags are back, {{post.title}} anyone? Oh, and it’s possible that the dream of posting multiple images in a post just might come true.

One thing I might suggest is have the template pages written in PHP that way users who know php and write custom query and such but also having shorttags/template tags would be nice. I would before something like [POSTTITLE] but that’s just me.

I’m looking forward to the new release of PixelPost keep up the good work.

  2. Jay January 6, 2010 @ 11:40 pm

    @BandonRandon:

The template pages allow PHP as well. The template tag syntax is completely optional. As a matter of fact, the tags get converted to actual PHP code and cached, so there isn’t any speed degradation. So in a way, it’s identical to writing PHP, it’s just easier for people who aren’t used to programing.

As for the syntax, the double curly brackets, to the best of my knowledge, don’t conflict with any PHP syntax, so it’s perfectly safe to use both PHP and template tags in the same file template.

Tired of waiting I’ve already migrated all galleries from Pixelpost to Picassa.

    Hi there,

I’d really appreciate it if Pixelpost would be based on any of the better MVC frameworks available. That would make it so much easier to actually contribute anything. Right now, I rarely have the motivation to look at a web application’s code that seems to be packed into a single PHP file…

However, using Pixelpost is still the easiest and fastest way to maintain a photo blog with style, so keep up the good work!

    cheers,

    Tobias

That’s quite exciting! I hope we will get some news quickly…

  7. Michael Clark January 7, 2010 @ 8:30 am

It’s probably too late to mention this, but using regular brackets [[]] would save having to hit the shift key while working on templates. {{}} Just a thought.

  8. jaywilliams January 7, 2010 @ 10:41 am

    @Tobias W.:

We’ve tried a few MVC frameworks, but to be honest, they didn’t seem like a proper fit for Pixelpost. They added way too much bloat to what is supposed to be a very small and simple photoblog app.

We’re rolling with our own loosely coupled MVC setup at the moment, and its working out much better for us. Less is best.

    @Michael Clark:
Thanks for the feedback, I’ll bring your suggestion up with the rest of the crew.

Thanks Jay for your response. I am looking forward to Pixelpost 2.0!

  12. moly January 11, 2010 @ 3:01 pm

can’t wait to see it.. and use it..

  13. Seb January 14, 2010 @ 4:35 am

Wow these are perfect news for a perfect new year !!! Just a little question from my side, is there something like a database migration path already planned – that all the old users can easily jump onto the new version ?

Thanks a lot and kind regards,
    Sebastian

  14. jaywilliams January 14, 2010 @ 10:07 am

Pixelpost v2 uses a different database layout, but there will be a migration script that will move all of your posts to the new layout.

  15. Chris January 16, 2010 @ 10:52 am

I am about building up a website using pixelpost. Should I use therefor the current version 1.7.3 or wait for 2.0? Will there be an easy way to upgrade from 1.7.3 to 2.0 as soon as the new pixelpost will be published?

  16. jaywilliams January 16, 2010 @ 2:03 pm

    @Chris

Your best bet is to use v1.7.3, as the stable release of v2 is still quite a bit away. And when v2 is released, you will be able to upgrade to the new version, so you won’t loose all of your posts or comments.

  17. Alexander January 18, 2010 @ 3:09 am

I really hope there will be native support for clean URLs and post slugs, because in the era of SEO and wordpress-like abilities, it’s kinda crazy to have to rely on an outdated plugin and manual editing to be able to use clean urls instead of 1990-style index.php?id=4552 … So, really looking forward to something like custom permalink structure option ala wordpress :) Keep up the good work !

  18. jaywilliams January 18, 2010 @ 10:26 am

    @Alexander

As it stands right now, v2 will support two clean url permalnik styles out of the box:
    /post/12 and /post/my-title

And in the future, I’m sure we’ll add support for even more permalink styles.

  19. ken1to January 20, 2010 @ 10:36 am

Any new modifications to it’s actual structure to include also “Albums”, in other words classify posts with Tags+Category+Albums?

And, is they going to be any search method/code/tags to sort/filter by specific exif parameter? – I always dreamed about filtering all photos from specific camera o specific lens or even by method the photo was taken (AV/TV/P/…)

Any native support for navegation to keep the actual filter? eg. once selected X tag or X Category (or X Album) to keep navegating on result stub.

To the statement of “posting multiple images” all I can say is <3 <3

    -K

  20. Robert January 21, 2010 @ 1:03 am

If I could make a small request, it would be the ability to use Korean in the tags. I’m building a Korea photo blog, and tagging things in Korean would really help with Korean search engines… as you might imagine.

  21. philipingram January 23, 2010 @ 3:18 pm

As posted on the forums with suggestions, I’m pleased to await the arrival of V2.0 and mainly hope that multi-user sub-level controled admin or a community release becomes available. For the time being I’m working on something like this (http://www.motomontage.com/) that 2.0 might be able to simplify vs right now I am 1.73 (see recent page for example sites) and I am the only admin for the sites. I think it would be cool to give my customers control or their portfolio sites I provide them. Thanks for all you hard work.

  22. Andrew January 24, 2010 @ 7:33 pm

Any hint as to when we could roughly expect v2.0 to come out?

  23. Bookmark Heaven January 24, 2010 @ 9:03 pm

The information presented is top notch. I’ve been doing some research on the topic and this post answered several questions.Check out my website if you get a chance, just click on name. (I don’t want to leave a link, it looks too spammy)

  24. Chris January 25, 2010 @ 3:15 pm

Hey this news sounds great and I can’t wait to be able to post with clean URLs. I hope it comes out soon! Thanks for all the hard work!

  25. Stephen Procter January 27, 2010 @ 10:21 am

That’s great news guys, I cant wait to give it a try :)

  26. Tobias W. February 1, 2010 @ 5:55 am

Is there a snapshot version available in a public repository I might be able to try? Thanks, guys!

  27. philipingram February 1, 2010 @ 4:10 pm

    ditto on that Tobias…

  28. Lozbo February 2, 2010 @ 6:24 pm

Admin styling would be nice! (Admin themes)

  29. philipingram February 4, 2010 @ 12:12 am

Is it me or does some of these comments seem a little “spammy”???

  30. Othmane Benkirane February 4, 2010 @ 3:58 pm

The use of a hidden input is really efficient in the war against spam: if you hide an input, users won’t fill it, while bots will. You can see an explanation here: http://robmalon.com/hidden-form-fields-to-prevent-bot-spam/

I’m waiting for Pixelpost 2! I hope it will have an ajax interface, use a gorgeous theme, be more multilingual (I mean, in the theme too) and have the ability to show video/audio (through flowplayer/html5?).

  31. Stephane April 14, 2010 @ 5:52 am

    Cool!

Will it be possible to play time laps or video in pixelpost as this become more and more popular with the new camera possibilities?

    Thanks

  32. k May 4, 2010 @ 3:51 pm

    ———————————————
Put some catcha in here to avoid this large amount of spam!!!

I still want to see version 2 :)
    ———————————————

  33. Philip Ingram June 2, 2010 @ 11:14 am

Ok, so it looks like this blog has been abandoned because the amount of spam and lack of administration is ridiculous!

I love pixelpost and can’t wait for v2.0 but some feedback to your following would be nice. I can see on your twitter feed that PP hasn’t been abandoned but this site and and the lack of forum/blog admin might lead others to think it has.

If it’s funding you’re needing, why don’t you try to natively integrate fotofeed into V2.0 and negotiate to get affiliate $ for every PP user that signs up and uses their print ordering service? I bet they would be interested and sending some traffic your way too!

  34. stephane June 15, 2010 @ 5:57 pm

So when will the V2-0 be released???

  35. piplo July 9, 2010 @ 6:13 am

but…. where is v2.0 by the way?

  36. Sarah kho July 17, 2010 @ 4:51 pm

    Hi,

Can you please let me know whether the version 2.0 is still on track or development of this software is stopped?

    thanks.

  37. Alexander July 26, 2010 @ 3:16 pm

Same here, it would be really nice to know if anything will happen in the close future or if you don’t plan on releasing the 2.0 in 2010 at all ?

    Thanks

  38. Shahab August 17, 2010 @ 2:46 pm

You have released a new version, this is very good. But why Home Page is not something about it?

  39. Matthias August 28, 2010 @ 10:47 am

When will version 2 be released?? There are no new infos since a long time.. i’m waiting ;(
