View Full Version : Pings addon - Ping when published rather than on upload?

I recently added the pings addon to my install and quickly noticed that it would ping on images that I was not planning on publishing until much later (ie: I am pre loading the uploaded images and rationing them out over a period of time. Once a week preferably).
Has anyone figured out how to ping when the image/blog entry goes live?

i think this addon can do it but it is a great idea

Yes, I like the idea very much but know next to nuthin' about coding.
Actually, Pixelpost is such an elegant solution to the blogging issue, I am kind of surprised that it doesn't have something like this built in.
Unless, of course, I am drastically misunderstanding how the whole search engine optimization thing works (which very well could be).
Actually, this might be a great place for someone to explain exactly what the heck a ping is and why it is important.

To do a ping based on publish date you would have to run a cron on regular intervals that would check for new photos. While it may not be too difficult for the programming, it would require the user to set up the cron which may be more difficult (depending on the user).

Yeah, the cron job stuff would take some research on my end.
I guess my next question is:
how does pixelpost handle posts made for "future release". For example, I have a couple of images coming up that will go live in the next few weeks (I post once per week).
Right now, no one can see the stuff scheduled for the future.
In simple terms, how does pixelpost know not to show those images until the selected dates and how can we work that into our seo/ping/etc stuff?
What would be "best practice" stuff here?

Whenever someone visits your site, pixelpost shows the images that are are posted at or before the current time. If you have a picture from yesterday, everyone will see if, if you have a picture for tomorrow, nobody will.

Actually, there are ways around this. For example, every time someone loads a page, you could have an addon check to see if any photos that haven't been pinged yet are now published. Yes, this is less than ideal, but with the right code, it you could have set it up so it wouldn't be a resource intensive request.

The twitter poster is an interesting add-on. Would it be possible to make an addon that does the same thing, ie: post pings on command?
that way, we could avoid the whole "ping when you upload" and "check to ping when someone looks at it" kind of thing.
It wouldn't be automatic, like I would like but at least it would do the pings to the links that I could set up in the admin section.
It would also be really cool if it said whether the pings were done for that particular image or not.
Now... (coming down out of dream land)... Does anyone know how to write something like this?

Hmm.. I hear crickets but no answers on how to do this.
I saw someone with a cronjob idea. Anyone have any good reading for that?
Or, does anyone know how to make the ping happen the first time someone accesses the updated page (but not after that..)?
