5-10 latest thumbnails on the archive page

I wanted to know if there is a way to display the latest 5-10 or so thumbnails on the archive page. What I want to do is have text links for the monthly archive, and at the same time I want to show the 5-10 latest thumbnails. I tried using <IMAGE_THUMBNAIL_ROW> from the image_template.html, but that didn’t wont work on the browse_template.html page.
