I think I have a problem with GD-lib, is there a workaround so you don't need this installed?

You can delete a few lines so that it don't generate thumbnails, if you don't need that feature.

The quick and easy way is to empty the createthumbnail function in admin/index.php. I can check tomorrow what to delete exactly otherwise.

if you cripple the script you will loose a lot of functionality and it seems that you have a lot of trouble with the configuration of your server

I would suggest that you might check another webspace, with a smoother configuration, or let us say "more state of the art" configuration

to find a good equipped webspace is not so expensive anymore ...
