What am I missing

I read those pages. At least, I skimmed them. I took several exact lines directly from the "basics" page, pasted them in my blog, and they didn't work...? What am I missing? Do I need to put something in my post to signal that I'm including Markdown syntax?

What do you mean by, "It's different than I think." I think I understand what it is, so either I don't or it's just not working.

Any ideas.
