hi there
been running pixelpost 1.4 as a newbie and things were swell until i noticed that i was getting stupid referer spam. (those damn spammers)
so i did some reading and updated to 1.4.2
followed the update instructions and went through the install and no glitches.
the admin panel seems to be working and the index page shows up.
then i did a clean referers in the addon page and updated the banlist.
for whatever reason i can not see previous image posts or click on previous image thumbnails to access them.
in safari i get the following error.
"safari can't open the page.
Too many redirects occurred trying to open “http://ambientgabber.nu/photo/”. This might occur if you open a page that is redirected to open another page which then is redirected to open the original page."
and firefox says:
Redirection limit for this URL exceeded. Unable to load the requested page. This may be caused by cookies that are blocked.
honestly i dont know what all this means.
otherwise here is the usual other info
http://ambientgabber.nu/photo/

hmm. i'm running firefox too and i got the same error. the only difference i see is here:
Guessed imagepath: /home/sites/ambientgabber.nu/public_html//photo/images/
Configured Imagepath /home/sites/ambientgabber.nu/public_html/photo/images/
in the guessed imagepath there are two backslashes before "photo" and in configured imagepath there is only one. that may be your problem...
Maybe there is some problem with your ISP??
Try to change Image Path to ../images and write back what is going on with this configuration.
totoro

i changed the image path to : ../images
and this is the weirdness i get.
Paths
Guessed imagepath: /home/sites/ambientgabber.nu/public_html//photo/images/
Configured Imagepath ../images
Image Directory: Does Not Exist (should be ../imagesimages) - Thumbnails folder not writable!
You must set correct permissions on this folder or you will not be able to create any thumbnails.
Set the folder to chmod 777 (read, write and execute permissions for owner, group and world).
Thumbnails Directory: Does Not Exist (should be ../imagesthumbnails) -
Language Directory: Does Not Exist (should be ../imageslanguage)
Addons Directory: Does Not Exist (should be ../imagesaddons)
Includes Directory: Does Not Exist (should be ../imagesincludes)
Templates Directory: Does Not Exist (should be ../imagestemplates)
it behaves the same way as prior.
if i set the image path to be: ../images/
i get the following:
Paths
Guessed imagepath: /home/sites/ambientgabber.nu/public_html//photo/images/
Configured Imagepath ../images/
Image Directory: OK - Can we write to the directory? YES.
Thumbnails Directory: OK - Can we write to the directory? YES.
Language Directory: OK
Addons Directory: OK
Includes Directory: OK
Templates Directory: OK
same behaviour though.
im confused. there are 2 more questions.
what generates the guessed image path? why did it decide to be "....//photo/images/" - how come those "//"
in my admin and in the actual webserver dir i can see all my images.
currently the image path is set to: "../images"
since my understanding of this stuff is rather limited i appreciate very much so all the help. (im not quite sure how where to start or continue.)
Sorry for my mistake, Image Path should be ../images/
If all works now OK you shouldnt change anything :D
totoro
11-13-2005, 01:32 AM
now the image path is set to be: ../images/
i get the following:
Paths
Guessed imagepath: /home/sites/ambientgabber.nu/public_html//photo/images/
Configured Imagepath ../images/
Image Directory: OK - Can we write to the directory? YES.
Thumbnails Directory: OK - Can we write to the directory? YES.
Language Directory: OK
Addons Directory: OK
Includes Directory: OK
Templates Directory: OK
same behaviour though. its still giving me the same "error"
i cry
Connie

strange, if I enter the links manually, I get the images:
http://ambientgabber.nu/photo/?showimage=16 or
http://www.ambientgabber.nu/photo/?showimage=15
etc.
only the links don't work...
Joe[y]

try clearing your browser cache resetting your cookies... (sorry if that is inconvenient!) then also check that your ip address didn't make it's way onto your ban list.
Connie
11-13-2005, 12:25 PM
I don't get it in OPERA, I don't get it in Firefox, I don't get it in IE
the pages try to load, very very slow
by the way, the images are far too big! 145 kb!!!!
even with cleaned cookies and all temporary internet data deleted in IE, the page is not loading
maybe the domain is a big redirection mess?????
totoro

thanks for the pointers but i think im still running into walls here.
this is what i've done until now.
currently
http://www.ambientgabber.nu/photo/
Guessed imagepath: /home/sites/ambientgabber.nu/public_html//photo/images/
Configured Imagepath ../images/
Image Directory: OK - Can we write to the directory? YES.
Thumbnails Directory: OK - Can we write to the directory? YES.
Language Directory: OK
Addons Directory: OK
Includes Directory: OK
Templates Directory: OK
accessing other pages through the page links still don't work.
direct url links do. same behaviour. with emptying cookies history etc.
it somehow seems to get stuck in a loop of some sort. i dunno.
what i still dont get is the guessed image path with the two "//"
anyways one thing that i tried based on a comment of joe[y] was the banlist.
i studied the banlist a bit more indepth and noticed that ambien was one of the banlist words which i then deleted.
cleared the referer list etc. same behaviour.
my next test was the following
i clean installed v1.4.2 from scratch starting from the beginning.
new location. new mysql database etc.
before uploading i removed ambien from the banlist in the php file.
then i did not futz with the directories because by default everything seemed happy.
as you can see based on the following

any ideas guys?
Connie
11-13-2005, 06:21 PM
no ideas because I just don't understand these two slashes
are there any redirections?
is your domain redirected to another domain by some scripts or frames?
ask your provider, please!
Joe[y]
11-13-2005, 06:30 PM
what behavour was noticed on your three test images?
for your new test installation can you please try changing the configured imagepath to ../images/ - if it works then we can just work out what the difference is between the two installations.
totoro
11-14-2005, 08:31 AM
i asked my domain host for general help.
their reply was that they were not able to help with added script problems.
i will inquire furthermore if they are any redirectional scripts on their end.
about the behaviour of the test directory.
with Configured Imagepath /home/sites/ambientgabber.nu/public_html//ptest2/images/
it has the same issue as the other site. the other pages will not load using the navigation links.
i haven't changed anything yet to avoid more confusion.
though i do know in my own tests that it acts the same as above meaning the navigation links don't work.
i wish i could be of more help to myself and you guys helping me patiently. but i dont know any php stuffs.
could it be that the links somehow enter this endless loop? thus the too many referers error?
jeez. of course this happens to me.
Joe[y]
11-14-2005, 02:51 PM
ok. sounds like your host sucks to be honest! they should offer some sort of support if you feel they could change something.. but anyway..
change your test installation imagepath to ../images/ like before. as i said - if this works then we know this isn't the problem in your other installation. if it doesn't work then we know what the problem is and can concentrate on finding the solution.

i set my test blog to the above mentioned image path.
here is the new info:

though again trying to navigate using the page links. ie. previous or thumbnails etc gives me an error. the same mentioned in my previous posts in this thread. - redirection limit exceeded. blocked cookies maybe etc.
http://ambientgabber.nu/ptest2
i've asked my webhost if they have any special scripts or server settings that limit redirection/referer actions or some kind of setting that could cause such an error.
Joe[y]
11-15-2005, 04:41 PM
The page isn't redirecting properly
Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.
* This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies
this is what i get when i try to follow the links. i don't understand it.. it's like cookies are blocked - but on your domain rather than a browser... weird.
totoro
11-16-2005, 03:47 AM
yep that's what i get too.
i inquired with my webhost if there is some special setup that they are using.
wonder what they will say.
otherwise i dunno what to do. i guess i have to start learning php and stuff?

joe[y]
thanks for hashing this out with me mate.
talking with my host. they are having their engineer look at it if they come up with anything. im not sure how far they will go.
i let them know that the authors have almost never encountered this problem.
i did some research and i found some things. but im not sure what to make of them bcos i dont really understand all this server stuff.
here are the links. maybe they can spur some ideas?
http://forum.pixelpost.org/showthread.php?t=1806
http://wordpress.org/support/topic/15170
.."I don't think it's so much a browser issue, as I suspect (note the emphasis) that it's a PHP / your host issue.
Specifically, I can't help feeling it might have something to do with the way the browsers are being asked to behave in response to a header redirect and mod_rewrite / .htaccess rules etc. Somewhere in there it seems that a loop is being created that expires the browsers' ability to sensibly redirect the page, and it lets you know that."
this may be completely useless but who knows:
http://gallery.menalto.com/node/39408
maybe all those links are just not any help at all?
Joe[y]
11-18-2005, 04:19 PM
have you checked for a .htaccess file in your photoblog directory or anywhere else on your server space? if you find one post the content of it here...
also, give these ideas for your host. it is clear that this i a problem with url redirection configuration on your host but the exact problem i cannot tell from the info i have - your host should spot the problem right away if they know anything about their server configurations!
wishing you luck!

maybe unsuccessful upgrade with failed DB conversion is the cause.
I'm just speculating. Maybe something unrevertable has happened. Did you back up?
totoro
11-29-2005, 07:17 AM
yeah i backed up. running some tests on my own for the time being.
been busy. grumble.
i asked a friend of mine to have a looksee.
he duplicated the index file onto his site. and it works fine.
so i guess linking to the site works and somehow within my server it falls into a loop?
he also speculated that it has something to do with my webserver.

You are not alone anymore as i have the exactly same behavior with my install of pixelpost... Just have a look : www.yozz-online.com (www.yozz-online.com/index.php)

you have upgraded or you have fresh install?
I think you have set something wrong in cpanel. it shows the fron page fine but when clicking on thumbnails it errors about exceeding number of redirections! You might have a infinite loop of redirections! check redirections in the cpanel. also check .htaccess file on your hosting account. It might have something strange.

Hello, thank you for your answer.

- i know it shows only the front page, i have the same problem as totoro with the infinite loop
- what redirection and cpanel are you talkin about? in pixelpost or in my ovh account?
- i don't have htaccess files
Thank you very much!

in 1.4.2 try commenting out line 443
from
header("Location: index.php");
to
// header("Location: index.php");
raminia
11-30-2005, 10:57 PM
the code is going through some infinite redirections. it might be from you host or from the script. the only place in 1.4.2 that redirects the browser is that line 443.

-i am not using any addon
-at my local host i use easy php so it's a apache server and everything works fine

could you get server log after hitting a side page of PP?
Hello raminia.
How can I do that?

Hi again.
Here is where I am now :
I put the same site on another host and that's working very fine.
So it's a problem with my host OVH.
Can you help me asking them what they or I should do? Should it be a problem in their php.ini file?
Thanks in advance. I hope that my problem could help users or developers in the future.

im so lost. help pls
Hello totoro
The php.ini file is one of the php configuration files of your host. I don't know how to have the logs either... Hehe waiting for a nice people to help me :P

Is that bad if I use the 1.4 instead of this one as totoro said that was working? Actually the 1.4 does work for me too....
Connie

you will have troubles with spam maybe if these spammers find your photoblog
many things are updated in the newer versions, many more options, which you will not have profit of
Ok thank you, so still waiting for someone to find the problem :D
Merci.

I need server log. do you use cpanel? open it and search for "Raw Access Logs"
totoro
12-03-2005, 11:46 PM
for all those reading this post.
1.4 seems to work fine - but thats with spam.
without spam 1.4.2 and 1.4.3 gives us referer errors.
raminia i will try and get to my "Raw Access Logs". i assume that cpanel means the control panel for the webhost?
i will also try and track down the php.ini file.
since my friend copied my index.php page as a index.html file and put it on his site with a slight mod it seems to work. so external links work.
see link. http://infect.la/marco.html
in the head part of the html file he included
<base href="http://ambientgabber.nu/photo/" />
</head>
i dunno. i feel like im talking out of my butthole. im not so versed in this webstuff. i can get by but with php and etc its kinda doing my head in.
any ideas? i will try to find those logs.
raminia

again I need server log to investigate your problem.

i assume.
do i send it to you per personal message?
raminia

if you can send them both
you might send it personal. my email address is also my username here @pixelpost.org
