I am new to the forums and also new to asking for a critique - so help me out if I am not understanding the rules.

So the picture I was at an orchard in the snow and it was an amazing scene, yet my picture, although an okay picture, hardly captures how nice the place looked. Any thoughts on what I could have done better?

nothing i can say about the photo in itself.. it's very nice. though maybe you could have used the white balance to whiten the snow more.

perhaps also a row with flat snow (no treads) would have really made this photo wonderful!

That is the picture that nailed it, The rays on the top and lack of treads are awesome. I am jealous that you have so much snow, I was hoping to do some nice snow filled holiday pictures but its pretty much turned into fall weather over the holiday stretch melting all my snow. Sucks.

Funny you say that - with 401 I set the white ballance by reading from the snow and the picture came out blue! I had to turn it into monochrome to get it to look good and still I though it lacked an adequate range of shades. But maybe it is the better picture - the other one is not as interesting.

well that's weird! but yeah.. it's certainly the more interesting image. plus b&w is in my opinion the best way to go with snow.
