i'm going to be shooting a lot of photographs in clubs when i get back to london, this shot is from my first try earlier this year.
what do you think? I found it really hard to get good pictures in a dark club with different coloured strobe lights flashing all over the place, my camera couldn't focus at all, everything is moving so damned fast, there are drunks bumping into you all the time and lots of other things. anyone got any tips on shooting in this sort of enviroment? i guess it might be similar to a concert, but the stage would probably be lit at a concert...

i love the colors and the mood of this photo.. my only suggestion would be to use a tripod so that everything that isn't moving comes in clearer. shots in dark places with lots of light always turn out kind of shakey without a tripod. but i like the movement of the dj. nice :]

carrying a tripod might be a bit tricky around a nightclub!!!

i suppose as far as the lights go there is some timing involved but my bet is most of that's gonna be luck so just keep snapping. auto-focus is going to struggle always in a place like that.. use manual! a flash won't be noticed either - maybe play with it's sync a bit if you still want to keep the clubs lights.. a rear sync would be a good in a situation like that and it would improve the sharpness i think.

I love it! I think a flash would wash it out and slow the movement down and this movement is, in my opinion, the strength of this shot. Colour is good too under the circumstances. I like the tripod idea - but not sure how you would do that in a club - but for sure if only the people were moving and the forground equipment was static and sharp it would make an awsome shot even more awsome!

thanks for the feed back guys, i appreciate it :)
i've gotten good results with flash + long exposure before, i'll see if i can dig out an example later.
a tripod wouldn't be possible in a club, maybe in the dj booth... but only in the bigger clubs.
i have absolutely no idea what you mean when you say rear sync, but i will google it after breakfast ;)
i think i must have held the camera against something in that shot, exif says it was a 1sec exposure and you can see the camera movement is in a straight line.

second sync, or rear curtain flash:

Normally your flash fires as the shutter opens, with second sync your flash fires as it closes. So you get a moment of good exposure, after X moments of long exposure.
