Is there a way to display in the index page the number of comments a picture has? For example "Comments (1)" or "2 Comments" etc.

try the <IMAGE_COMMENTS_NUMBER> tag. it gives you just the number.. so "Comments <IMAGE_COMMENTS_NUMBER>" should do the job.
