I'm still getting a ton of spam. I've changed to Moderated so that my in-laws don't see ads for porn sites and cock extensions.
Ok, so I go into my Admin section, I mark all the Spam and then click Report Spam.
Is there anything else I should be doing? The Spam keeps coming.
Please give a non-technical long-hand answer. I do not understand how to do things with my database and referrers. I need it explained slowly and gently. I've read all the other threads here, and I don't understand the answers or solutions. They are way too technical for me.

Can you apply this? http://forum.pixelpost.org/showthread.php?t=3810 or ask someone who can - seems like we may have the answer to all SPAM problems

Honestly, I'm not sure I can.
What does this mean:
This is around line 223, please note the "; as the first line
I guess the other stuff is to look for a certain group of lines in the Index file around line 990 and then pasting in the other data. How do I count lines?

Is my index.php my image_template.php?

Never mind my last question, I found the index.php

Ok, I was able to find the places to add that text to my files. Where do I get the Akismet addon file that I'm supposed to upload?

Never mind, found that, too.
Out of time, gotta go pay the bills.

I went to the Akismet site but I can't figure out the API thing. Am I supposed to download WordPress? I looked at the FAQ but it is not clear to me where to install what, and where to get the key if I'm NOT a Wordpress user.
Help.

no need to download anything. you need to sign up here: http://wordpress.com/signup/ to get an API key.

I give up. I guess I am now the proud owner of a free Wordpress blog, but I have no idea where to get a key for an API - whatever that means. I also did all that code stuff and uploaded the Add-On, but I don't see anything new in my Admin section.
What am I supposed to do? In the mean time I've gotten another 30 spams of people pitching the most vile porno and drug stuff.
I appreciate that you guys are trying to create this software, but when is the new release? Will it have this built in? Will someone write a manual? No offense, but the Wiki is incomprehensible to anyone other than programmers and web hobbyists.
Please - I need help. What and where do I get a key, what do i have to install where, how do I stop this spam?

Found it, thanks. And yes, it WAS in the e-mail as well. Doh!
Ok, I got 20 more spams since then. I've got this all installed, let's see if it works.
Honestly, this is really beyond me.

if akismet can't do it nothing can. good luck....
i still don't understand why some people get hit so much more. you get hit so much wheras i've probably in a year been hit once or twice with spam - and i have no anti-spam stuff on my blog.
i'm probably just tempting fate right now.

Not sure why either - my blog is only three months old. I assume it may be because I listed the blog on the various blogging aggregators, or possibly because I submit entries to some of the weekly challenges that link directly to the site (PhotoFriday, MacroDay.)
So I got it figured it out. One last question:
What is HAM? It doesn't say so on Akismet's site.

i think HAM is a type of spam, not really sure...

Makes sense, I guess... Spam is not really Ham.

@Iron Flatline - since you did get it installed and probably working, why not write a better tutorial on how to install it than what I have managed, I would greatly obliged.
BTW - Writing documentation is a great way to start helping with any project for any one!

I was thinking the same thing - while it is still fresh in my mind.
One fina lquestion: I'm not sure it is working. A week ago I set my Pixelpost to moderate comments. I also had Spam control on - not the Akismet version. So I still got an e-mail notification every time I got a comment, most of which were spam recently. They would not publish on he site, and I ahd to hand delete them in admin.
They are still there. I turned everything off now (except Akismet) - should I still be getting spams at this point, or should most of them just vanish without me doing anything?

well right now if akismet detects a SPAM it will put it in moderation queue and not publish it for your site visitors to see. However you will still get an email if you have turned the email notification on and you will have to manually delete the comments marked by Akismet as spam
I am working on the next version which will automatically delete Akismet marked Spam from the database if left in moderation queue for 15 days (unfortunately the way Pixelpost is designed you will still get an email on every comment made)

That would be great Sensous. Right now there's little advantage to using Akismet, I may as well be moderating comments.

I need one final piece here: exactly how is this supposed to work once it is up and running. DO I report the Spam to Akismet everytime it shows up in my Comments Admin section? Do I just delete it? Do I hate Report Spam (the regular button?)
Guys, this is like pulling teeth. I can't possibly be the first person not to understand this, yet I don't see these questions asked anywhere. Please, how is this supposed to work??!

Ummm... Couple of things.
The added advantage of Akismet is that your legitimate users need not wait for moderation - they get their comments published right away.
The second advantage for the blog owner is that they do not need to sort thru the comments to see what is legitimate and what is not.
Lastly when a SPAM shows up in your moderation queue you are just supposed to delete it. Simplest is While in the admin section
Comments -> Moderation Queue -> Select All -> Delete Selected
You report only that SPAM to Akismet which Akismet has not been able to detect

Thanks for the response. How do I know whether Akismet has successfully identified the Spam? It looks the same to me when it is in the queue.

Use Akismet with Comment moderation turned off...

In Admin, when I select Spam comments (that were already caught by Akismet but still show up within ADmin) I can just click the regular "Report Spam" button and the comments go away. What does "Report Spam" do? Is there any point in doing that, or should I jsut click "Delete?"
