What is the major advantage of using pixelpost over folderblog?
I have to choose between the two and need more information to make a proper choice. Thanks.

PP is the best ;=)
we as developers cannot tell you what is better
but I think there are some points to keep in mind:
- which product has the most active community?
to get support etc.
- which product has more than one developer?
not to depend on one person for further development and upgrades
- which product is absolute utf-8-compatible? (PP is...)
- which product has the best separation between programm and layout?
PP has a complete separation, using templates for frontend and language-files for frontend and admin-section
- which product is updated regularly to react to security issues?
PP is in constant upgrade / development concerning safety issues
- which product is the most easy to use for administration, but flexible
- which product is the most easy to use for users (dummies)
- do you need more than one user?
- do you want a community tool or a photoblog for one user?
these are questions which can be "run" against many programs, but I think PP is a good choice ;=)
I remember that Folderblog does not have so much options and when I tested it (but this is more than one year ago) it had no UTF-8-option for safe character encoding, but what is one year in software cicles?

UTF-8 means, that all text is stored and presented in Unicode Character Encoding, so special characters of the different languages will not be messed
text which is entered in comment-forms or text which you use for description of your photos etc.
"ü" stays "ü" and not "?!ß" or something strange ;=)

i think folderblogs only real advantage over pixelpost is that it doesn't rely on a database. if you have hosting with a database or you are willing to purchase one then pixelpost is the way to go in my opinion.

yes it seems that folderblog just piles up photos and text files (comments). What is the advantage of using mySQL data base over a flat file data base?
For large complex data base's I understand, but for just photos, I do understand.
Maybe for hundreds of photos mySQL is better????? anyone know???

well, you can backup a mysql database, organize, tweak minor things...its just more detailed and custom, with lots of photos its a much lighter/organized load on the server...probably runs faster when built well ect

Simply put the principles are - Data should go in a Database and Text in a text file ;)
I had evaluated Folderblog and found it too simplistic and in turn restrictive.... Pixlepost allows you to do many more things and is extensible

I tried both but in the end, pixelpost was the best product for me. It has all the features I think one would need to run a photoblog, a great active community, awesome support (from the developers themselves!), many templates and add-ons.

That's exactly what I have found out too - after testing both for the last two days, as well as getting great support in these forums.

speed is also an argument...
especially if there's bigger amount of photos to deal with.
i'm using pixelpost for 3 years now.
sorry to have to say, folderblog is indeed faster than pixelpost, at least on the server of my ISP.
another thing is: the captcha feature does work!
as regards features, forum, community - for me pixelpost wins.

The new 1.6 version will be faster and will have better spam protection out-of-the-box. (This and a ton of other useful features)
The release is near and in the future we will continue our efforts to make it even better
