View Full Version : Need to disable comments

Large amounts (1200+) of comment spams continue to hit my humble little blog, much of it not "visible" in PP Admin. When I use phpMyAdmin to take care of the "invisible" spam, the comment database is cleared; all authentic comments were lost this way. I'm using Akismet, but it won't show or let me delete this new "invisible" spam.

I suspect that many other sites have been or will be affected by this. Does anyone know how to completely disable the comment feature?

use the forum search function in the toolbar at the top of the page

try "disable comments" or something along those lines

I did a search before posting. There were suggestions to remove the comment tag from the templates, but that won't stop the spam I'm getting.

It appears to me that there is no way to completely disable commenting. I love PixelPost, but the lack of a simple way to do this is a programming oversight that needs to be addressed soon; I'm not the only one being overwhelmed with spam, despite Akismet, etc. For better or worse, the immediate future of photoblogging will likely be comment-free.

I might also suggest that new bloggers avoid registering on Photoblogs.org, because my spam problems began in earnest shortly after I did this. Spammers are, IMO, using that site to find fresh meat.

I just ran a search for disable comments and found 3 different solutions in the results. remember, you have to read through them as well...

Ok, comments are now disabled on my site. Due to my total lack of computer training and paucity of programming experience, it took quite a bit of time to get it done even with the help I eventually found. Ultimately, the comment tag was removed from my image template, and some code added to a php file that I can't remember the name of right now.

Over the next few days I'll experiment a bit to see if I can whittle it down to the simplest possible technique, then report back here.

It's still my opinion that the option to easily disable comments in PP Admin is a feature that should be added ASAP, if not sooner. Spammers are probably targeting PixelPost because of this vulnerability.
