Thumbnail Issues

What could be the reason if thumbnails are not being generated? And are they generated once you upload a file? When I try and 'generate' a thumbnail the page doesnt do anything. What are some of the things I can look for?

1. Apache1.3
2. PHP 5
3. *NIX
- I compiled PHP w/ GD/JPEG support.

I can upload the images and I can view the exif data just fine. The thumbnails is the only thing I'm having problems with.

Any Ideas?

Images folder is writable, which is a good thing.

Thumbnails folder
Thumbnails folder is writable.

After clicking on "Re-generate thumbnails" this is all that happens. There isnt any errors reporting any problems so its hard to diagnose the problem.

did you install the server or is your site at a hoster?

well, one direction to look could be that you run PHP 5.0 and maybe there is something changed in relation to PHP 4.x?

I don't know which functions are not supported anymore in PHP 5.0 and if this is what PixelPost use to generate the thumbnails....

Thanks for helping me out everyone. =D I checked those directories and the images are being placed inside the images folder, but the thumbnail directory still remains empty. Both folders are set to 777.

Sorry for the ss.jpg not being displayed. After upgrading to mysql4-server I had to recompile php5 as well. Now that everything is in working order, other than thumbnail creations, where should I look first to troubleshoot my problem?

Strange case.
I have no idea right now. maybe tomorrow.
But you can check setting
error_reporting(E_ALL);
in the admin/index.php and see if you get critical errors;)

I have the same problem - thumbnails are just not generated, no error message whatsoevever, webserver can write images/ and thumbnails/ just fine. But both on upload and on "regenerate thumbnails" there is absolutely nothing done - no thumbnails generated.

sure you don't have GD installed. In the general info next to the GD lib should be some message prompting it's installed. but in your case GD is not installed. Ask your admin to install this feature in PHP

Oh, GD is installed - or actually GD2 is installed and that conflicts with the older GD stuff. Does PixelPost require the older library or can this be changed in the source? GD and GD2 have sligthly different APIs, IIRC, but I don't know how much PixelPost needs of it. I can't switch to GD from GD2 because of other packages that need GD2.

Found it, I think. You use gd_info to check for GD. That function is only available in PHP 4.3 and up - but Debian stable still uses 4.1.2 (and I didn't see any pointers on your pages that it needs PHP 4 >= 4.3).

gd_info can be replaced: look at http://us2.php.net/gd_info for the comment of johnschaefer - he gives a snipped of code to replicate the functionality of gd_info on older PHP versions in a way that is compatible with newer PHP versions (the gd_info lookalike is only patched in when there isn't a native gd_info function).

Now I get thumbnails created just fine. I have other problems left, but I can't nail them down to some special feature so I have to dig further there.

they are due to 4.2 (exif_read_data) or 4.3 (file_get_contents) dependencies. Have to hack stuff together to get those to work with 4.1.2, too.

I have a debugging tool for you
1) backup your admin/index.php
2) at the end of the file admin/index.php you see

4) try to upload a photo to your photoblog. after uploading look at the bottom of the page where it shows you the uploaded image. There should be some debugging notes like this.

I seem to have exactly the same problem. Above are my settings. I see no thumbnails, and there are no thumbnails in the thumbnails folder.

What can I do to get them back?

I did that, and now the Admin page is absolutely blank!

If I load BAK index.php everything looks as it did before.

I was very careful about the cut and paste. I can try it again if you think that is a good idea.

simply you have done something wrong in the php file and due to error you see blank page.

function starts from the word function and end with '}'
replace the createthumbnail function with this one.

I copied and paste it and it's ok for me. check the file and make sure that you have saved it as ansi and not unicode

Very strange. I cut and pasted while I had the file open in BBEdit from the remote site, and this time it worked.

I uploaded a new file and it created the thumbnail. There were no error messages or diagnostics.

So, I don't know what the modifications in your index.php did, but they worked. Thank you very much.

Regenerate thumbnails has no effect on the ones that did not have a thumbnail before, but I can delete those and upload them again to get the thumbnails created.

Again, thanks for the support. Now to see if I can figure out the template system. :D

I did nothing but I added some debugging comments that should appear under the uploaded image in the admin section and they should be commented for ordinary use!

look down at the bottom of the image you upload. (when you upload images in the admin panel, the successfull uploaded image will be shown at the bottom of the page. if you scroll down of the page you could see it.)
with my edited function there should be some debuging text shown which provide some info about the creation of the thumbnail for the file.

I also have the same issue with the thumbnails

I've found out that the gd_info() function does not work on my version of php. so I copied
This explains why it says nothing about GD while it is installed.
I ve copied the code above and enhanced it because I use a postgresql database instead of mysql.
the index.php does not give any trouble in the admin panel (no errors) but when I upload a picture still nothing happens.. I don't see the debug output and it still doesnt create any thumbs. there is write permission on thumbnail directory so that can't be the issue.

this is the only enhancement I made to make it work, or at least trying to. (snip)
