I searched the forum, found a thread that seemed to have the answer, but it appears the answer was never posted :-( Here is the question: I have a whole bunch of exif info on my comments page, it works great. I just want to add the lens type used for the shot. (ie 70-20mm, etc) I can't seem to add that EXIF to the page. If anyone has had success with this, could you help me out? Thanks!!!

hi
here is a workaround how to "extend" the existing exif tags
http://forum.pixelpost.org/showthread.php?t=5043&highlight=EXIF
As I know there is no tag for lens. With EXIF there is bigger problem as Pixelpost uses external PHP library for it and it wasnt updated for a long time. And EXIF stuff is really big issue as it is big and very complicated structure treated by each photo company (camera maker) in own way.

Thanks for the help all! I think I will do a manual workaround for now where I can stipulate lens type at uplaod. It seems to be the easiest route at the moment. Thanks again!!!

I was always wondering how should the camera know which lens is used if you use "analog" lenses for example?
there are some details which are known by the system and some are not.
We must live with that incertitude... it is life;=)
Even when you have analog body there is some electronic inside this body and lens. It is needed by body to take all condidions for current lens in the best way. Camera reads what lens is connected what parameters does it support and makes a photo.
PS All data which you can see in LCD of viewfinder (i.e. f, time and so on) is thanks to electronic in body and it is better set thanks to additional electronic in lens :) Analog isnt so analog from "few" years.

Only CPU lenses transmit info to camera (no matter digital or analog). If you attach lens that has no CPU contacts you'll find in most cases that aperture, focal length and lens type are are missing from EXIF.

what he said, if the old lens doesnt have the chip inside, the camera doesnt have a clue
some newer cameras you can manually set this information within the settings, like i know you can on the d200 and it will plug the info into the exif, which may or may not be correct depending on if you keep this information up to date as you change settings and things around...
