View Full Version : Spam control, comment moderation etc...

I'm having a little trouble with comment spam on my site, so I entered some keywords in the "Spam Control, Moderation List" area of pixelpost. I was under the impression that any comments containing those keywords would be sent to the moderation queue... but they weren't.
So, I enabled comment moderation under general options, and still no comment moderation!
Is my pixelpost install faulty? Or is this functionality not working yet?

I'm still trying to figure out how this works myself, but did you upload the .htaccess file? I believe that's how it works. You add to the list and click "Update all banlists", but all that does is give you the ascii text for the .htaccess file. You then upload that file (where exactly I'm not sure, I've uploaded it to the root of the blog) and you have to make sure to upload it in ascii. You may also need to CHMOD the htaccess file to 644 or (RW-R--R--).
Hopefully, someone who really knows how this works will come along and confirm all this, or if not, set me straight :)

Thanks for the reply Geoff, I'm glad I'm not the only one. I have been updating .htaccess with "Deny from" and the relevant IP address of the spammer, but they're just coming through with different IP addresses!
Last night I installed the Akismet modification, which was easier than I thought it would be... It has caught 3 spam comments in 9 hours and prevented them from being published! Finally a victory!
For anyone else experiencing this, I would recommend Akismet. It was a 10 minute install, and it does exactly what it claims to do!

akismet is certainly the favoured tool for most. i don't need either but i would go for akismet if i had to choose.

I'm having the same problems. Whether comments are enabled immediately or moderated, they are still PUBLISHED immediately so something is wrong with the "enable moderation" feature. I'm using PP 1.6 and they are finding it on the testbed site which I posted a link to on this forum (b/c we have created a PP theme).
Perhaps just disabling comments altogether, but that's no fun. People want to share their photos and hear good things about them. I've tried Akismet but haven't been able to get it to work.
Also, in my comments panel or spam control panel, PP IS updating banned IPs all by itself when I click Report Spam after checking all the comments. I don't need to edit my .htaccess file to have it add the banned IPs (the IPs of the comments I've just "Reported"). HTH.

The setting in the control panel to send all comments to the moderation queue is not GLOBAL setting.
This setting works for all the new pictures. Old pictures still have the comment setting to Publish.
