View Full Version : Some possible(?) features I'd like to add to my site

I was wondering if I could add any of the following features to my PP photoblog. I'm fairly new to PP and don't know how to code plug-ins so I'm hoping there's something already available that I could integrate easily.
- A portfolio page, which includes links with thumbnails to each category. For example, there will be portrait, landscape, sports, etc. and when I click on each thumbnail, I'll be taken to all the photos (with that category).
- Drop down lists that sorts: most commented, photos by months, photos by categories, etc.
- A recently thumbnail preview that automatically plays like a slideshow.
I'm looking for something like this site: http://www.vanilladays.com/portfolio, to implement.
Most of the sites that I've ran across with those features use CMS like Wordpress, Movable Type, and a few others. I'm wondering if I could implement those In PP. I'd appreciate any feedback. Thank you!

AFAIK none of the features you describe are already implemented with an addon in Pixelpost.
The portfolio page should not be so hard to do, perhaps it can be addes to geos' show-category-addon.
Photos by months and categories are available with geos' show categories addon. Most commented is available in drwilkins' Comment stats addon, but only for administrator until now.
There was something like the thumbnail slideshow, it was done like a photo caroussel, you have to search in the addon forum for that.

Portfolio you can build by setting up correct categories at your Pixelpost and then you can use just simple page-by-page archive or even normal, standard archive.
All of this things can be done with correct addons/hacks/... :)

Would I still go ahead and upload each photo I want in my portfolio using PP? Or would I do that manually by creating folders on my home server? I'd like to add categories like portrait, landscape, etc. but I also use those same categories for my "photo a day" images, and I don't want everything showing up in my portfolio.
I found a free Flash program that does a decent job called Simpleviewer. I've implemented on my site here: http://www.picturesforfaith.com/templates/simple/clippers/2007_03_05_San_Antonio/index.html. Problem is I have to create an entire new gallery for each set of images and all the HTML pages are static, meaning I can't use PP tags. It would be a pain in the arse if I ever need to change something global, but I can't see any better way to create a (dynamic) portfolio with PP.
GeoS, could you elaborate on what you mean? Thanks.

Could you elaborate more on this addon? I wasn't able to find it. I asked something similar in another thread but a PP team member told me it's not really possible yet. I'd like the last 10 or so image thumbnails to cycle automatically in my about page. Thanks.

I am not sure what you mean by "cycle" the thumbs, but perhaps this is what you need:

Yeah, something like that, but I've been told I can't use PP code on the about page. Plus, I don't think the author shared the addon code from that forum link. I was looking for something like this: http://www.chromasia.com/about.php. The recent images cycling at the upper right hand corner. That site isn't PP but maybe something like that is possible with PP.
It is as someone have to write proper addon with such a nice slideshow.
All you need is:
1. find person who will find proper JS code (which is easy to get in many versions from various pages dedicated to JS)
2. write short pixelpost addon getting from DB last x published images (it would be cool to use in this place variable configurable in admin panel)
3. translate this data from PP DB to variables used within JS slideshow code
That isnt hard if someone knows good PHP, Pixelpost enviroment and has got elementary knowledge of JS.
