View Full Version : Personalizing Messages in English Language File Ruins Formatting of Some Templates

OK, I have come across a problem that has me completely stumped.

I completed the initial install of the 1.6.0 files with no problem. Everything appears to be working perfectly with the exception of 12cropimage which hasn't worked since IE 7.

After completing and checking out the initial installation, I went in to customize a few of the messages in the English language file, such as what it says after people post a comment successfully. These changes involve editing only the text that is supposed to display, NOT any code that runs Pixelpost.

I have determined that if I make ANY change to the text in the English Language file (even as small as one character in a display message), it causes the formatting on my Image template, and Comment template to get screwed up. Specifically, the title bar appears about 25 pixels below the top of the frame (ordinarily it is right at the top of the frame with no gap). On the Images template, in addition to this formatting issue, the image notes field gets boosted up to a MUCH larger font size than is supposed to be displayed.

Now, here is the weirdest part: I have not made ANY changes to any of my templates, or the the Dark.css stylesheet. And, weirder still, the four other templates I have, which use the exact same stylesheet (Browse, TopFive, About, and Copyright) are not affected. I can change text in the Language file, and it screws up the Image, and Comments templates, but not the other four that use the exact same stylesheet.

I am not using any fancy templates, just a slightly modified version of the Simple.Dark template that comes with Pixelpost.

I would love to figure out what is causing this so I can personalize my message that appears after people post a comment, and also the message that appears if a message gets identified as SPAM.

Please let me know if you have any idea what could cause this to happen, or what the solutin is. If you need additional information from me to figure this out, let me know.

Thanks in advance!

What do you use to edit the language files? The files are in UTF-8 format (as I remember it correctly) and you need a true ascii editor to edit these files. Programs like Notepad, Wordpad, MS Word are not usable for this.

Well, that could explain it. I attempted the edit using Notepad. I have edited all of my other Pixelpost files with Notepad and never experienced an issue. There must be something special about the language files then?

Where do I find a "true" ascii editor to use for this? Is there one that you recommend? Hopefully a free one ;)

You were correct. I downloaded a 'real" ascii text editor, and that solved the problem. I can edit any text I want to and it works just fine. No messed up format or anything.

Thanks!!

Glad it works: I recommend either http://www.pnotepad.org/ or grimson.
