View Full Version : Uploading difficulty

I have a problem uploading photos form the admin interface. I converted my blog to version 1.6 a few weeks ago and changed the template and everything has been working well until the last few days.
I get an error message at the bottom of the admin page when attempting to upload images that says, "Error something's wrong in file upload! Images folder not writeable!" I have checked this and it is writeable as far as I can tell. Also I no longer receive emails once someone leaves a comment on my blog.
Any ideas to sort this out much appreciated.

Check the forum for the mail problem, it has been well discussed.
About the upload, are you sure the permissions are 777?

My permissions were 775. Should they be 777? I changed to 777 and same problem persists. :( Will check threads re: email difficulty but it's strangle that both problems occured simultaneously.

Gave it a bit of time and it now works again with 777 settings. Why would this problem occured after it had been working fine for a number of weeks? Should I be worried someone has somehow changed my settings? I'm also concerned about leaving this as a 777 setting although I really am clueless regarding this.

Please contact your hoster about this issue. If it worked previously with 755 then it should still work with 755. In short, 755 is safer then 777, so regarding that aspect I certainly would contact them about this.
Ask them which permission a directory needs to have to write files in them by a PHP script uploaded by the FTP user.
Problems regarding mail is welknown and have been fixed in the upcoming final of 1.7. You're running a release candidate. (see here for more info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_release_life_cycle#Release_candidate ) Anyway, find the fix here: http://www.pixelpost.org/forum/showthread.php?t=7430 Next time please use the search.
And since this has nothing todo with the 1.6 version, I'm moving this thread to the 1.7 forum.

It's possible your hosting provider changed their settings. On some servers 775 will work but for most, 777 must be used.
(Edit: Dennis beat me to it.)

Thanks for all your help. I'm using Eleven2 hosting and have contacted them regarding these diffuiculties before posting here. Apologies for covering issues that have already been bought up. As far as I was aware I was using verion 1.6 and searching back a few months through the archives of the appropiate 1.6 archive failed to show me an answer. Once again many thanks for the help and suggestions.
PS to Dennis. Are you sure I am running a 1.7RC? Info in my admin says "You are running Pixelpost version: 1.6.0 (in the right direction) - April 2007"? And if I am running 1.6.0 and download the email fix file for people who are using 1.7RC will it make things unstable?

If you are running 1.6, do not download the new functions_comments.php file from SVN - that is only for 1.7RC1.
I'm also on Eleven2, and have never had any of the issues you listed - not sure what is happening with your account. I'm able to use 775 for permissions for the images and thumbnails folders without issue. I would definitely be asking E2 support about why that doesn't work on your account.

In that case ask them about your mail as well. Since you're running 1.6 I'm kicking this thread back to were it was. (With the sincere apologies).

Hi,
I am experiencing the exact same problem as described by mike6721 (error message "Error something's wrong in file upload! Images folder not writeable!" upon image upload).
I am not sure if it is connected, but it started after I tried to upgrade to PP 1.7 RC1. So I went back to 1.6, but I am still having the same problem. My /images/ folder permission is set to 777 (same for thumbnails). I am on one.com hoster.

vandrende, set your images path and thumbnails path to ../images/ and ../thumbnails/ respectively in the options panel.

Hi Dennis+,
My image path is set to /images/. I cannot find any option as for setting /thumbnails/ (in pp 1.6). In the option panel everything is green, but I can't upload files.

there is no thumbnail path to set in 1.6, but images path must be set to ../images/ (notice the 2 dots .. before the slash /

Ah! the two dots before the slash: that was it.
Thanks you austriaka.
