View Full Version : Drowning in SPAM

I have a relatively new Pixelpost blog but already I am drowning in SPAM. I have implemented the <TOKEN> in my "image_template.html" file (the Pixelpost template I use [Delicious v1.1] does not have a "comments_template.html" file). I have also installed Defensio.

Defensio seems to be catching most of the SPAM. However, I still get emails notifying me of these SPAM comments. Is there some way I can set up Defensio so that it automatically deletes the SPAM comments and doesn't notify me of them by email?

I've searched the forum for two hours and have read about many different SPAM-stopping solutions, but most of them seem to be aimed at earlier versions of PP.

Is there something else I should be doing, along with <TOKEN> and Defensio?

How much spam are you getting? I get 10-50 a day - most of it gets flagged as spam with the Akismet filter. I do have a good list of keywords that flag others to the moderation list. I rarely have one actually get published though.

Hi, I'm the author of the Defensio plugin.

To prevent getting an email whenever a spamcomment is caught by Defensio, please download the latest version from the website: http://www.pixelpost.org/extend/addons/defensio-for-pixelpost/ (this could be found by searching the forums as well....)

If you would have looked at your options, located in your adminpanel OPTIONS -> SPAMCONTROL you will see a section for Defensio. I bet you saw it since you had to enter the key.

You might have missed the Automatic removal of spam option with underneath a checkbox and a setting for the number of days you want to retain the caught comments.

Hope this helps.

Hi Dennis,

I'm the one who emailed you recently about this issue. I thought I had the most recent version, but it appears that I don't. I am running 1.3.1, and I believe you mentioned the latest version is 1.3.2.

Defensio seems to be marking the messages as SPAM - no problem there. However, I still get email notifications for those SPAM messages. Apparently 1.3.2 will fix this problem? Because in the 1.3.1 release notes it specifically says something about fixing this issue.

Thanks,
Chris

Dennis,

I looked for upgrade instructions for Defensio but couldn't find any. Are there certain files that shouldn't be replaced, or should I just upload the 1.3.2 addon folder and replace/overwrite all files?

Thanks again,
Chris

Chris, overwrite all files. That should do the trick.

Yes, the 1.3.1 had the necessary code, but I made an error so it doesn't work as expected.

I installed 1.3.2 and so far no email notifications of SPAM. Yippeee!

Thanks Dennis.

This ugly problem is lifting its head again. All of a sudden I started again getting email notifications on comments caught by Defensio. It has been doing a good job recently and I haven’t got much false negatives but this email thing is a bit annoying.

I upgraded to version 1.4 but it didn’t seem to help.
