Strong Quake Jolts SW China
 

China on May 19 began a three-day national mourning for the tens of thousands of people killed in a powerful earthquake which struck the country's southwest on May 12.

BEIJING, May 23 -- The quake death toll has risen to 55,239 in Sichuan alone as of 7 p.m., Thursday.

About 83,988 people were rescued. The quake also injured 281,066, while 24,949 are still missing.
