Possible to show most recent thumbnails first?

Is it possible to configure the main page layout so that thumbnails display the most recent first?

I'm guessing that this would be an edit to the index.php?

Or am I looking in the wrong place?

you mean reverse formating of thumbnails?
there is similar thread available you can see the discussions but no solution availabe for now.

top-down to down-top or left-right to right-left?
