Front-End Password Protection?

Not sure if this belongs in the Hacks Forum, but here goes...

I'd like to add password protection to the front-end of my photo blog. Anyone done this, or is there an existing mod to add this feature? Thanks!

what do you mean with front-end?

.htaccess can do protection such like user/pass to access your photoblog.

I've created photoblogs for posting photos of my children. I don't want these photo blogs to be open to the public. I'd like to require username/password for visitors to view these photo blogs. Ideally, I'd like to set up the users with email/password, but I'd be happy with one username/password that I could send to those who I want to grant access. I suppose I could add security rules to the domain, but I'd like to have it built into the photoblog itself. thanks!

This password protection is something what every hoster will offer

it is not our intention and we really don't have the nerves... I can already imagine all the " I've lost my password..." problems if we would add this functionality

but as PP is meant to be stupid simple we for sure will not add what can be done otherwise, for sure

check your hoster's website management panel, there is (I am quite sure) the option for "password protect directories"
do it and it will work

that is really easy. As long as you won't forget the passwort to access your website management panel, you can set that and reset it as often as you want and we have our "peace of mind"

Seconding the .htpasswd is the way to go. You should check your hosting provider as Connie suggested, I'm with Dreamhost and it is very easy to password protect a directory (maybe 5 minute work).

If you're thinking about building it into the photoblog itself, it takes some work; and I would say significantly more than trying to setup .htpasswd from scratch (assuming your host lets you create .htaccess and .htpasswd files on your hosting package). You'd have to create the login UI and all that jazz.

Maybe someone in future will add addon generating .htaccess files for Pixelpost installation (one such solution is currently implemented to the main code of PP).

Since I will be creating header/footer include files for my photoblogs, for consistent navigation, etc. I will most likely just create a redirect to a login page if a cookie does not exist for a visitor. This will be a simple solution and does what I need...

Connie - I was simply asking if anyone had created a mod/hack for this functionality. I was NOT asking for your evaluation/opinion/condemnation of the idea! I'm sure at some point many of the mods and hacks that are now heavily used were thought to be unnecessary, too much work, whatever! I understand that the hosting companies oftentimes provide the ability to add password protection to a domain/folder. However, this is not what I'm looking for. Yeah, maybe you're heavily involved in PixelPost development, this forum, etc. etc. but take a ten-second breather before you shoot down questions/comments/ideas! And I'll second GeoS.....CHILL!!

I am interested in create a password protection too, I tried a script it works but then everytime I click to view previous picture, it asks for password again. I am not sure how to do that .htaccess thing.
Anyone has manage to set a password for their photoblog? Like when you type in the path of your blog, it asks for a password, if pass, it will let you in and then won't ask for password again for whatever you click inside.
