Would you donate?

Out of curiosity, how many people would be willing to donate to Pixelpost?

Giving away things isn't free...we've covered our minor costs well, but we're looking into expanding things a little bit to provide more organized development/bug tracking and give better support by providing better documentation.

So yeah, I know I donate about $90 a year to Pixelpost...and pixelpunk, the original creator of Pixelpost, still covers a few of the costs himself even though he is not around anymore, just for the sake of love.

Then eleven2.com picks up our hosting bill which is awesome. Every bit helps...

We have a large user base, but I'm just throwing the question out in the open...out of curiosity. A lot of people have contacted me and asked about donations, but at the time we really just didn't need to have any sort of funding.

Now, we're growing and we need to reorganize and fix some stuff. With the warm weather approaching I figure it's a great time as more people are going to be out shooting and need Pixelpost more than ever!

PayPal donations are accepted though Pledgie:

I talked to Will about this before but kinda forgot about things, we would be willing to donate a Month worth of time from one of designers to help in making some marketing plans and site design for pixlepost. If you think our current site kinda sucks, its fine, we realize its out of date, which is why we have been working very very hard behind the scenes on a new kick ass site, which I think you will see here in a few weeks, probably 4 to 6 weeks that we know how to design and are willing to offer this as a community driven project or strictly working with Will or the PP team as a whole.

I am also willing to kick in some cash if you let us know how it will be spent etc.

Where do I send the $$$?

I've asked in that past where to send a donation, go for it! I have used pixelpost for well over a year now and the software and support have been nothing short of fantastic. There are so many people who have helped me (web neophite :-) and others. I can't write code and I don't own a hosting service so it would be nice to contribute in a way that will help maintain pixelpost and pixelpost.org. Great product, great support...where do I pay

I would not donate money because I decided for Pixelpost as a free application.
I wrote some addons and try to help in the forum, the time I spend for that is my part of donation and I really like to do that.
If there is anything I can help you with, IE page design, template design, logos, scripting, testing, writing Wiki articles, translating english into german or whatever, feel free to ask.
But no money, sorry.
This is my humble opinion :-)

We're looking into a bug tracker application which is about to go live, it's called lighthouse

my main goal over the next 2 months is to improve the documentation, and take a little strain off the forum. Our wiki is good, but we fight spam and various other things, so I also thought about moving to a hosted solution called stikipad, which you can mask right back into your personal site, it's just using their services and system...basically a spam-free and secure solution.

vbulletin costs money each year too, around $30, we might add on a template to get a redesign started, and lastly I was thinking a license of mint would be really good, we don't really pay attention much to our stats here.

Documentation can make or break an OS application, if it wasn't for the great support of this forum then pixelpost would be a great deal less popular.

Rodney - I'll be sure to talk to you more about that soon

austriaka - the investment of your time is the best of all!

--------------

http://www.pledgie.com/campaign/show/95 is the system for donations I setup. At the moment, I plugged in a rough goal of $400 just to see how things work.

Why don't you just have an option to donate?
The fact that people have in the past asked how they can donate shows that there are generous users out there who want to give something back.

But keep it totally voluntary - with no "bonus" features etc for those that do donate. That way you dont lose the ethos of PP in it being a free, community based app, but those who want to say thank you have the chance to do so.

I also think KArin has a great point - there are those whose time, advice, expertise and help as part of a community are a bigger and better "donation" than $10. And keeping it a level playing field regardless of donation means that those people who give in non-financial ways dont miss out.

I personally, would be willing to donate $ as a thank-you gesture for the time and effort put into something I find very helpful and useful and get a lot of use from.

I think donation is absoluely fine, (and I really can't see why anyone would object to having the option!), just dont make it a paid for app.

All the best, and continued thanks for everything the team put into PP.

Have a look at this one:

It includes a wiki already

The track system is well known, but I'm pushing us towards a dumbed down system, something that is as easy to manage as it is to use.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

It seems like such a silly thing to even ask the question. I generally prefer to just do things rather than talking about an idea until I'm bored with it before it's even occurred. It would take 20 minutes to setup a PayPal account and stick a donate button somewhere on the site. If people have been asking for a way to donate cash to the project, when they see the donate option they're going to fork over some cash. Even if you only get a couple of people donating a few dollars, if nothing else that would compensate you for the time it took to setup the donation form. If on the other hand, a lot of people donate even a little bit of money, it would go to greatly offsetting some of the costs of managing the project.

I would suggest adding a "Donate to PixelPost" button inside the admin panel of the next release of PP. That way even the people who use it the most will get the idea in their head to contribute a couple dollars to the project.
