Problem with hacked index.php

When i change original index.php from root to hacked index.php from some templates (for examples from pepper revisited or salted) I cannot see my photoblog (anly blank page). What´s the problem?

I uploaded all other files from templates to right directories.
Templates without hacked index.php work OK.

My configuration:
Pixelpost version: 1.4.1 of (released 24 April 2005)
Server software: Apache/1.3.33 (Debian GNU/Linux) mod_gzip/1.3.26.1a mod_ssl/2.8.22 OpenSSL/0.9.7d AuthMySQL/4.3.9-1 PHP/4.3.10-2

peper template propably used 1.3 instead of 1.4 for starters.

and secondly, designers should steer clear from modifying index.php as this should not be part of the template and may affect other users modifications to their index.php.
