SQL Client problem?

Newbie.....sorry if this is a stupid one-

Getting the following error upon installation:
Database Connection Error: Client does not support authentication protocol requested by server; consider upgrading MySQL client

Hosted on a godaddy server....hostname etc... all entered correctly

Thoughts? Is there a need/way to upgrade the MySQL client on my box

Using 1.71
