Moderation Queue not working?

Hello!

I seem to be engaged in an epic battle with some of the millions of spambots that troll the internet to comment on hapless blogs with their peculiar emails, their nonsensical comment bodies, and most of the time, plain old gibberish.

I've -always- had my blog to publish to moderation queue, not to blog until approved, but for some reason, spambot comments get published directly to the blog, bypassing the moderation queue entirely. I've tried disabling commenting entirely, and that doesn't seem to work either. The moderation queue sometimes gets one or two spam comments, and winds up catching my legitimate comments, but I wind up with the headache of having to go in and selectively delete all of the crap spam comments that somehow publish themselves to my blog, without asking for moderation.

Have the spambots exploited some hole in pixelpost? Is there something wrong with my configuration? I wouldn't mind just deleting from the moderation queue, if the comments just went there instead of publishing directly.
