Http:BL addon not working

hi everybody,
as my pixelpost installation seems to attract far more comment spammers than actual visitors, i decided to give the http:BL addon a try. both components (admin and front) show up nicely in the admin interface. i have acquired an API key from the project honeypot website and set it up in the addon settings.
unfortunately, the addon doesn't seem to do much, though - i'm still receiving lots of spam comments. when querying the respective IP addresses on the project honeypot dashboard, the results indicate that the requests should have been blocked.
is there anything else i need to do? if not, any hints/ideas for debugging?

side question: while trying to solve the problem, i read about an addon called "spamlog" several times (e.g. here).
is this thing publicly available, and if so, where?

I'm the author of the http:BL addon and I can confirm it does work. Did you activate both addonfiles, the front and the admin ones?

Which version of Pixelpost do you use?

Spamlog is not available, although I use it on my blog.

yup, it says "status: ON" for both of them in the "installed addons" list.

Pixelpost version: 1.7.1 (Better than Ever) - January 2008
just noticed there's a red message saying "Session save path is empty!!" in the "general info" section. could that be of any relevance here?
