Today me and Mark (from markpower.me.uk) went out and went around Bolton Mueseum and took lots of shots. Of which I will post some of soon. But on the way back we were having a conversation about street photography and how you go about asking to take somebodies photo. Anyway Mark asked this chap and we took a few.

How do you go about asking people to take there picture?

i've never really thought of taking any photos of strangers. those who i have are always attention seekers as it is and you can be sure they won't mind.

a portrait for me.. is only good if i know the person.

Well, I think if you plan to photograph somebody who is exposing himself like this man, it will be ok, and maybe you give him some pennies like you would have done for his music ;=)

I am not so sure about the right way.
If you ask people for permission, they might not behave normally after your question, my grandpa always had a "photo face" ;=)

if you don't ask you might run into trouble, this depends from the cultural environment for sure

just some weeks ago in my holidays, I asked an armenian shopkeeper if I might take some photos in her shop and around. The result: she locked the shop, took us to her home, gave us tea, fruits, cheese, bread, and many things more and we had to sit and eat for 2 hours

Many Thanks for the messages its a tough one because I see many photo's on different photoblogs of homeless people and sometimes they are asleep or something like that, now I imagine they haven't been asked. Its hard, I suppose you've just got to gage the situation.
