Addon Request: Image Description 'Read More' link

Hi,
I refer to this thread in the Help forum: http://forum.pixelpost.org/showthread.php?t=1657

I'm looking for an addon to limit the amount of text in the image description of each entry, and should the text go over the limit, a 'read more' link takes you to another page with the entire text. (probably on the comments page).

I definately don't have the smarts to code this myself (I'm a designer, not backend!), so was hoping someone could help me out. I'm sure it would be a useful addon for many people.

Connie's suggestion of how it could be done:
Quote:
(take the imagedescription, cut it into pieces according to the allowed length, checkt that this will be a word-margin,
put the first part into one tag
put the second part into another tag
write a link "more" (with adjustable text in the language file!!!)
Cheers all.

having something to limit it to say 200 characters or 255 or whatever it is would be useful

Limitation on number of words/characters is bad idea. It should be decided by an author of description - for example: form for adding description may have two fields - one for 'short', the other for 'extended' part of description.

maybe with a warning if you go over a certain number in the first "short" field , that would be a good compromise

I appreciate you thinking about it GeoS. This is really the one thing that's stopping me from getting my blog underway, so would definitely be nice to see it added.

So like on news publication web authoring tools, where it has and excerpt section above the actual content area for submission?

humm...must think

an easier way to do this would be as follows:
you have an addon, which checks the length of the "image notes", if it's too long it replaces the text with an abbreviated version, and a link to a javascript popup with the full version, or reloading the page with an extra variable in the URL string to display the whole version.
that would be pretty quick to implement as an addon, if you're interested feel free to PM me.
