Offline / maintenance mode switch?

Hi all,

Has anybody got a way to temporarily switch PP on or off from the admin panel, so that the site is totally inaccessible? Gallery2 and Joomla, for example, have options to do this and still display a themed page, so I'm wondering if anybody has figured this out for PP.

I generally use .htaccess & mod_rewrite to display a notice to all people except my own IP.

I second that (mostly I just hack the index.php). My hack is described in detail here:

this can be easily modified to display a message to anything not corresponding to your IP address.
