seem to have lost some detail in the highlights of the whites on the flower...it looks to me as if it was strobbed, yet the exif says it wasnt...must have been some very bright light

Well, looking at the sky in the background it looks lke it was a pretty sunny day. If the camera was metered for the bee there is a good chance that the white flower would have gotten blown out. It looks like the sun was coming from the right side of the image and the other petals were not blown out.

Maybe next time (if an image similar to this happens to give you a next time) I would say give a smaller f stop a chance. Looking at the shutter speed, the condition of the light, and the f stop used, go for something a tad slower, say 2 or three stops. Yeah it will slow down the shutter to about 1/500 or 1/125 but you could get more of the bee's body in focus.

Just my $0.02...

Still a nice icture to look at though, good job.
