It's called not having a backup...
I accidentally blew away my pixelpost db... One of those deleting something else (a test install of oscommerce) - and slipping down a bit on the mouse and answering yes to that lovely 'are you sure' message...
Thankfully - I'd only been adding photos for a month and only lost data on about 30 shots. Oh well...

check with your host, some do backups every so often and can restore data with the last few days.
one time there was a serious issue that went wrong with pixelposts forum, i wasnt able to upload my backup on a slow connections, e2 had everything from 2 days before...we lost some posts and user data...but shit happens and it was a grave relief not to lose three weeks of posts and stuff

In all honesty - I wanted to change a few things anyway. Sad to see them go, but not too sad if you know what I mean. If there was anything I was too upset about losing, I'd definitely ask my webhost to look for a backup. Knowing how well they run things - I'm sure they have it.
I've worked with data/databases for a living for well over a decade - definitely a wow I'm an idiot - I know better type of thing. But nothing catastrophic.
