auto-resize addon vs manual Photoshop resize

Hi, I see that there are a few addons which do automatic resizing when uploading images. So, this means, I could upload 1024x... images, turn the photoblog to 800x..., and in future, turn it to 1024x, without needing to resize manually and upload everything once again. Sounds great, but I wonder if the auto-resize addons produce the same quality pictures as for example Adobe Photoshop would?

No and No

The autoresize addon is meant so that your visitors have an option of seeing an intermediate size picture and decide if they want to see the huge mega wallpaper size... you cannot switch sizes like you are mentioning

I have found that there is some loss of sharpness when pictures are resized with PHP (GD)

yes gd is by no means a replacement for resizing in photoshop or any other imaging program.
