Different sorting filters for the archive?

It's me again.

I was wondering right now how difficult it might be to create a dropdown menu for the archive (like the dropdown menu for choosing categories), which features different sorting options for the thumbnails, i.e. sort by rating, comments, date, etc.

A feature like that would plainly rock! Unfortunately I am not comfortable enough with programming to do it myself So if somebody is bored right now, this might be a start

As long as Pixelpost in main distribution supports only few of things which you wrote then would be problem. Votes, rating, ... - it is from addons and not everyone use them.
Solution could be to ask some devloper for addon with configuration in which user can set which stuff can be used in order list.
