1.2 UPGRADE MELTDOWN

I upgraded to 1.2 very carefully following PP's instructions and instantly lost all of the photo and thumbnail info off my database.

I say "info", because the actual photos are still stored on my server (along with the thumbnails). In addition, the individual comments and categories for each photo are still in my admin panel.

But when I go to my site, there's nothing there except a blank template. I've tried it with both the old and new templates and the only thing consistently missing are my photos!!!

Doublechecking permissions did not yield any help.

Keep in mind that my site has been running smoothly since the third version of Pixelpost, so I do have a high level of confidence in my server and it's ability to handle these scripts.

I'm assuming that the _upgrade.php file altered my database to the point that I won't be able to retrieve the info connecting each photo to it's thumbnail, comment, and date of post. Right?

Starting from scratch is the only way I see people viewing my blog again.

PLEASE, SOMEONE TELL ME I'M WRONG AND THAT I DON'T HAVE TO COMPLETELY REBUILD MY DATABASE!!!

Very sorry to hear this!

The info is still there, I'm sure. The upgrade only renames one table and adds two fields to another one.

I don't have my regular computer with me so I can't do much tonight.
Check the names of the table, make sure it corresponds with the pixelpost.php file, the $pixelpost_db_prefix variable.

Just to add one thing.
You must upload the new pixelpost.php file.
It contains one small very important piece of information, the prefix variable.
I actually made that mistake when upgrading the demo here.

Edit: I've pulled the upgrade file for the night. It will be up in roughly 10 hours. Just to make sure there are nothing wrong with it.

I really hope stuff is alright at your place greentraveler.

Doublechecked this info - it was correct.

Made sure of that when I tried v1.2 and was totally unable to access ANY part of the admin panel or site after install. I tore it all down via FTP, uploaded my backed-up site, and can now actually do things again.

Unfortunately, the "copy file" add-on has now stopped working...it just says "copied 0 files" each time I make an attempt. It worked smoothly in the past and, just when I need it... I'm obviously on a very unstable site right now and, unless someone comes up with a miracle, I'm gonna have to start from scratch.

FIXED COPY FILE PROBLEM BY ENSURING IMAGES FILE HAS PERMISSIONS SET TO "777" BEFORE TRANSFER. i'd been using 644 without luck.

It sucks that fixing this has turned into my day, but the real pisser is being able to see all of the viewers comment's that will clearly be deleted when I start over.

What a shiite day.[/b]

How's it going for you Greentraveler?
I see your site is up. I would love to get some more information on this, about your install of pixelpost. I tested the upgrade on two of my installs (demo and local test) and it went without hiccup, so when you says it is deleting stuff I must know exactly what it is that's not working, and try to relate that to something in the upgrade.

Thanks, and very sorry this upgrade didn't go smoothly for you

Hey PP,

I was able to get my site up again by clearing out the 1.2 installation and reverting back to the 1.1.2 site I saved before upgrading.

The "deleted items" I was referring to was the info linking each photo to it's thumbnail, comment, title, and place on the database. On my admin panel, I could see each photo to edit/delete and each comment and category. But the actual site itself refused to load any photos - just placeholders for the main photo and thumbnails alike in addition to the template contents.

Keep in mind, the actual site still had full "images" and "thumbnails" folders with the pics the database is looking for...but they simply wouldn't display. Changing permissions in either place didn't help.

After your second post, I tried to do a clean install of v1.2 and was then totally unable to get either the admin or site to open at all. My browser just hung as long as I'd let it without connection.

This really freaked me out, so I uploaded my saved site and used the "copy folder" add-on to get the photos back in Pixelpost's view (after the permissions problem described above). I deleted my old photos and thumbnails, changed permissions on the "images" and "thumbnails" folders to 777 and was able to slowly begin putting things back together.

An interesting note - once the photos were back up (in their original order), the comments attached themselves to photos again, albeit the wrong ones. I'm guessing this has to do with each photo being assigned a number by the database on original entry and a new one during this second upload.

In any event, I couldn't see a way to reintroduce them and it seemed silly to have comments about "vibrant color" on a B&W pic, so I deleted them all. OUCH!

And that's my experience with v1.2. Sorry I lack the technical expertise to delve deeper into the troubles I encountered, but this is an accurate account of what I saw and dealt with.

No apologies necessary, PP! v1.1.2 was running smoothly and I should have known better than to mess with the good thing I had going. Back-up is key in a situation like this! I love how things work now and will be extremely careful in the future.

P.S. You need to start thinking about the Paypal purchase/donation route - this program is definitely filling a void for customers willing to pay a little something to the developer. Just a thought!

I love the fact you're not hunting me down with an axe at the moment
Thanks for the kudos.
A quick thought about introducing google adsense has crossed my mind, different people has very different results from adsense though, and I'm not sure about it.

Other than that, donations are, well. As long as I don't have to pay extra bandwidth or something (I don't yet) then I'm not that interested. This is free software, I hope some people will enjoy it.

Cash is good and all, but what matters most is people coming in to the forum telling me they like the software. Or sends me emails telling me it's great. That's a real kicker, worth more than $10 via paypal

I would love to receive snailmail postcards or photos though Look for a link on the main page, below the whole site.

Happy you got it back working.
We could've worked it out though, next time email me / icq me / pm me or whatever, I'll help fix it.

The database stores the imageinformation, it is connected to the image with filename only.

The comments are connected to the image via an id-number. There's really nothing that makes this not work. Each image has a unique id, each comment are connected to that unique id.

Hope this makes it a bit easier to understand the way it works.

Thanks for the database info, PP!

The site I have right now is just what I was looking for when I first discovered Pixelpost. Period. I could stand on the limited scripting knowledge I have today and run this blog succesfully for years to come. That's a clear testament to your initiative and I thank you for it. I'll only email/icq/pm you if I find myself totally lost. Keep up the great work!
