Maybe a *really* useless idea...

I've always wanted to generate my own thumbnails by cropping specific areas of the original image, so the thumbnail also looked 'good' (say, on the archives page). Resizing for thumbnails doesn't always tell you what the image is about.

Here's an example:

By cropping out that particular unshaded portion of the image, I'm conveying what the image is about in the thumbnail as well; almost like displaying the 'gist' or a concise 'abstract' of the original image and what it's about (I really hope you get the idea). To show you what I exactly mean, here's an example where the photographer's actually taken the time to crop his image for the thumbnails:

The best way to do this directly inside of Pixelpost would be Flash (like how flickr does it.) which we know is really powerful.

So, hoping someone's understood what I'm trying to say, do you think it's a good idea to develop maybe a Flash plugin of sorts of Pixelpost where you could crop, resize, rotate, etc your images for any purpose? Like resize an image, crop out a portion of it, and use it for thumbnails (assuming you you want that option)?

The reason I'm asking is because I've wanted to beef up in Flash for sometime now and this would be a good project to get my hands dirty with.

Thanks for reading!

P.S. Since I use MovableType for my blog and have tried out Pixelpost for an upcoming photoblog, I'm delighted at how simple and fast PP is! So much more potential! Wonderful work guys!

please, have a look what PixelPost brings as a feature because you explain us indepth what we have already

don't you know about the option to crop thumbnails??????

Go to your admin / options/thumbnails-page and choose it

we are not planning to integrate any flash inside PixelPost, the ambition of PixelPost is: clear, transparent, simple but powerful, no technical-featuritis...

but even with this ambition PixelPost is moving to be the best, most useful PhotoBlog-Software at all :P :P :P

Thanks Connie (now I know for a fact that admins never sleep :wink I just love the way flickr handles photos and thought I'd learn a lot by doing the same and more in Flash. The DHTML stuff is nice, but let's just say I love Flash more!

And who knows... you might re-read my post for a future release of Pixelpost...

flash isn't as widely used so a javascript option is more available to the masses - although a flash version would indeed be more nice to use.

But Flash is really easy to install! I read somewhere that 95% of browsers have the flash plugin installed (could be an inflated statistic).

But anyway, I was working on my own photo CMS (in Flash) when I came across Pixelpost. Didn't want to abandon what I started, so thought I'd ask

well, I think, as I said, we want to keep PixelPost clear and handy

with Flash you will not get any good results as you don't know whether Flash is activated or not etc...

etc. pp. many points

well, the thumbnails are "croppable" already
the rest what you mentioned can all be done before upload

and I don't understand the idea: I present my photos, I prepare them before I upload them, should a user rotate them?

Why should I want to do that?

this could be an addon but when in the next version, addons could change the admin panel. Then, addons could be used in the images/edit page.

More flexible addon could make PP more interseting.
(BTW, I dont' like flash too much, It's too fancy )
